What Seahawks GM Schneider said about QB draft visits

The Seattle Seahawks have not looked to the NFL Draft for a quarterback in quite some time. Since John Schneider took over as general manager in 2010, the team has only drafted two quarterbacks: Russell Wilson in 2012 and Alex McGough in 2018.

However, the organization recently met with a pair of 2024 quarterback prospects in preparation for this month’s selection. These possibilities include Oregon’s Bo Nix and South Carolina’s Spencer Rattler.

Nix’s draft stock has fluctuated widely. Some mock drafts place him as high as the middle of the first round, while others have him falling as low as the third. Rattler is more commonly seen as a middle-round pick, coming off the board around the third or fourth round.

It’s worth mentioning that the Hawks made a pseudo-draft pick at quarterback this summer, trading third- and fifth-round picks to the Washington Commanders for third-year quarterback Sam Howell, as well as a fourth- and sixth-round pick. But that doesn’t mean the team isn’t aiming to expand the position.

Russell Wilson was taken in the third round in 2012, only one month after the team signed Matt Flynn to a three-year, $26 million contract. Flynn was brought in as the starter, but Wilson beat him out and never looked back. There is one significant difference this year. Howell is projected to be Geno Smith’s backup, so picking a quarterback would force Seattle to either carry three quarterbacks on the roster, keep one on the practice squad, or break ways with Smith or Howell.

Schneider was on Seattle Sports’ Wyman and Bob’s weekly show on Thursday to discuss the impending draft, and he mentioned bringing Nix and Rattler for visits.

“We want to get to know these guys a little bit better and spend time with them, and Spencer’s a real impressive guy and so is Bo,” Schneider said in a statement. “And we simply wanted to be able to spend a little more time with those guys, and have the coaches spend more time with them at the board. You should be mindful of their time as well. They’re out here on west coast visits, so we attempt to schedule those around their visits to the Rams, Chargers, and Niners.

“We love Sam,” Schneider said of Howell. “We are quite pleased with what we accomplished in acquiring Sam. And we talked about his age; he has the experience, but that doesn’t preclude what we do in the draft.”
