Honda Say Aston Martin Must Sign Drivers “We Need To Win”

Honda wants Aston Martin to choose the best driver combination for the 2026 season.
Aston Martin has accomplished a significant signing ahead of their 2026 alliance with Honda. More specifically, the British team signed a contract deal with Double World Champion Fernando Alonso. The team is heavily investing in infrastructure and facilities in order to push itself to the forefront of Formula One. Along with this financial investment, the best possible driver lineup is also required.

In this sense, keeping Alonso was a no-brainer. Some speculated that Honda might be interested in working with the Spaniard again. Their last collaboration, after all, was tough for both the driver and the engine manufacturer. However, times have changed. Honda has made it apparent that Fernando Alonso is a driver capable of assembling a winning team at Aston Martin.

Koji Watanabe, president of Honda Racing Corporation, stated that driver quality is paramount.

Honda seeks strong drivers at Aston Martin.
Watanabe also stated that there have been (and will be in the future) intensive discussions with Aston Martin regarding driver selection for 2026:

“We had many conversations with Aston Martin about our partnership beginning in 2026,” he told motorsport.com.

“During that time, we also discussed drivers, and we agreed with Aston Martin that Alonso was unquestionably a top-tier driver.

“Aston Martin asked us if there would be any problems if Honda extended Alonso’s contract.” The situation was discussed at several stages.

“However, Honda made no inquiries on this topic. In any case, we should logically debate the type of driver lineup we require to win.”

The Lance Stroll Question
Clearly, the Aston Martin-Honda relationship is one of the most intriguing in Formula 1. The Japanese manufacturer is well-prepared to fight at the front. They can provide the Silverstone-based squad with both an elite power unit and a greater sense of autonomy.

Being a client team has certain limits that make championship contention tough. Aston is now limited by the gearbox and engines offered by Mercedes. As a result, the 2026 season will mark the start of a new era for Lawrence Stroll’s workforce.

Returning to the subject of driver selection, Aston Martin has a decision to make. Until recently, Lance Stroll has had an almost certain position. There is currently no evidence that the team’s stance on the Canadian has changed. Given that Lawrence Stroll remains the owner, the 25-year-old is unlikely to be removed.

Perhaps Honda could introduce a new variable into the equation. With so many drivers on the market, Aston will have to explain why Stroll is worth foregoing so many appealing options elsewhere.

Yuki Tsunoda, for example, has previously been described as a desirable Honda choice. With the Japanese driver’s ongoing development, he may surely boost Aston Martin’s driver roster in 2026 and beyond.
