Seattle Seahawks GM John Schneider slipped in an interesting nugget about the team’s view of drafting a quarterback

Last week, during his weekly interview with Seattle Sports’ Wyman and Bob, Seattle Seahawks general manager and president of football operations John Schneider dropped an intriguing tidbit about the team’s plans to pick a quarterback.

Wyman highlights UW Huskies LB as a Seattle Seahawks draft target.

“We love Sam (Howell),” Schneider said of his team’s new backup quarterback, who was acquired via an offseason trade with the Washington Commanders. “We are quite pleased with what we accomplished in acquiring Sam. And we talked about his age; he has the experience, but that doesn’t preclude what we do in the draft.”

Many others, including a former NFL quarterback, were drawn to the quote’s last line.

“We say this about (Schneider) every time about this period in the calendar year, (that when) he says things, you better sit up and listen to him,” Huard said Monday on Seattle Sports’ Brock and Salk. “Looking back in the rearview mirror, you’re like, ‘well, that’s what he said he’d do, and that’s what they went and did.'”

“… I think what I hear in that is that, ‘if a (Michael) Penix (Jr.), if a (Bo) Nix, if a somebody falls to such a place where they become a tremendous value for us, we better have done our homework and pull the trigger,'” he said.

Schneider’s comments came after the Seahawks hosted Nix of Oregon and Spencer Rattler of South Carolina as part of their 30 pre-draft visits. Seattle has also been mentioned as a possible destination for Penix, the UW Huskies standout who has spent the previous two seasons lighting up defenses under new Seahawks offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb’s scheme.

The team already has two good quarterbacks with starting experience in Geno Smith and Howell, but it still has to fill other positions despite having only two of the top 100 picks in the upcoming draft. So, how quickly would Seattle select a quarterback in the draft?

Mike Salk, co-host of Brock and Salk, asked Huard if he believes the Seahawks will draft Penix if he is available when the team picks 16th overall in the first round.

“I don’t think so,” Huard replied, “because Geno is here, Sam Howell is here, those acquisitions have been done, and the foundation has been created. And at 16, I don’t think it’s the same value proposition as it is at 29, or 44.”

Salk shared his perspective on the situation.

“I think if you look at a player and you believe that they are worthy of being a top pick, you make it, whether it’s at 16 or at what 20, whatever,” he added. “If you believe he is a franchise quarterback, don’t wait and don’t care about value. Either you believe he is a franchise quarterback or you don’t.
