Sheffield Wednesday contract talks with one of their first-team stars have ‘stalled’, reports Dom Howson.

Sheffield Wednesday’s contract talks with one of its first-team players have’stalled’, according to Dom Howson.

Sheffield Wednesday expects 18 first-team players to leave Hillsborough this summer.

The club has a slew of players who are out of contract or whose loan terms are about to expire, leaving the Owls with yet another summer rebuilding project.

Barry Bannan is one of those out of contract this summer, and he recently criticized the club’s management of player contracts, saying:

“It’s about providing some certainty for players moving ahead. This does not seem appropriate for a club. It’s hardly an ideal position. If people’s futures were clearer, it would be much simpler for them, but as I have stated, you must prioritize the club at this moment. The club is paying your money, so you should go out and fight until your contract expires, and then whatever happens will happen.

Sheffield Wednesday’s goalkeeping crisis

“This season, the number one place has been hotly contested.

During the early portions of the season, Cameron Dawson and Devis Vasquez shared the starting role, with some fans favoring Dawson and others Vasquez.

However, following Danny Rohl’s arrival, he would prefer Dawson, who has played 18 times in the Championship this season and kept four clean sheets.

Dawson was heavily criticised in the buildup to January, causing the Owls to sign James Beadle on loan from Brighton.

Beadle has since shone, keeping six clean sheets in 16 Championship games for Sheffield Wednesday.

However, Dawson’s contract will expire in the summer, as will Beadle’s loan term, leaving Pierce Charles as the lone first-team goalkeeper.

Sheffield Wednesday contract talks with Pierce Charles have stalled.

Charles, 18, earned his first-team debut in the FA Cup against Coventry City this year.

Charles also made some outstanding stops in the 1-1 draw before playing in the 4-1 loss in the rematch.

The Northern Ireland U21s international is yet to make his Championship debut, but he has appeared on the bench on multiple occasions.

Charles, described as a ‘excellent’ player by teammate Josh Windass, has a contract with Hillsborough until 2025.

It appears that the club is anxious to extend his stay, but journalist Howson has stated that renewal discussions with the teenager have come to a halt.

Pierce Charles must adopt this approach toward his future.
Right now, Charles appears to have all the cards.

Sheffield Wednesday will be anxious to keep him, not just because he is a talented young player, but also because he is their only current goalkeeping option for next season.

Charles appears to be set to play as number two next season, with Sheffield Wednesday expected to recruit an experienced goalkeeper on a free transfer.

And, if Sheffield Wednesday wants Charles to commit his future to the club, he should be guaranteed game time.

He should put forward his case to be the club’s number one goalkeeper next season, especially if the Owls are relegated.

Charles may be inexperienced, but he’s making waves on the international stage, and fans were thrilled with his brief appearance earlier this season.

Although many players will leave Sheffield Wednesday in the summer, this may provide an opportunity for Charles and others to make a significant impact.
