Seahawks’ John Schneider clears the air about ‘removal’ of Pete Carroll era relics

Pete Carroll may no longer be as engaged with the Seattle Seahawks, but several players felt that getting rid of his memorabilia was a touch excessive. His time with the franchise has been nothing short of historic, and the Geno Smith-led team still wishes to commemorate it. John Schneider took an unusual decision to remove these items before the NFL Draft with Mike Macdonald, although it appears that he did not mean for it to be interpreted incorrectly.

John Schneider stated that he still intends to maintain Pete Carroll’s trademark phrases and other images that remind the Seahawks of him. However, he simply wanted to relocate it to another media, namely Seattle Sports.

“Right outside the team room, to the indoor facility.” There are numerous photos and phrases from Pete’s reign here. Like, everything we’ve done together in the last 14 years. But celebrating our history is all over this structure. So, we’re also becoming a little more digital,” the Seahawks owner stated.

John Schneider then explained the various aspects of Seahawks history that they intended to digitize and their purpose.

“We’ll have TVs up to celebrate Dave Wyman tackles or Curt Warner runs. Shaun Alexander, Coach Holmgren, and Coach Carroll. The entire thing. When you step around the corner from the indoor facility, we have the plates of every player that has played here. The images from all of the guys, including the more recent ones,” he explained.

The Seahawks’ general manager even persuaded Coach Mike Macdonald that this approach would increase team morale.

“In Mike’s mind, it’s more like, hey, we’re honoring our past. Guys get it. However, we are not coming in with certain slogans or leadership mottos. “We’re going to build our own as a team,” Schneider said.

Pete Carroll re-entered the league after winning the college football national title with USC. He subsequently went on to coach the Seahawks from the 2010 season until 2023. During his tenure, he led the Legion of Boom to a Super Bowl victory and served as a solid mentor to Russell Wilson. Carroll concluded his head coaching career with a 58.6% victory rate, winning 50% of his postseason games. However, his last year with Geno Smith did not go well.

There are plenty of stories to tell about his tenure with the Seahawks. This is why players like Leonard Williams want to be reminded of their accomplishments through memorabilia. All while establishing a new identity.

“We will definitely respect the Seahawks’ legacy and history, but I believe it will provide us with a solid platform from which to build whatever we desire. We don’t want to be like any other team that has been here before. “We want to create our own identity,” the linebacker stated.

Coach Mike Macdonald might have a lot of work ahead of him. However, he is not bound by the legacy of those who came before him. This decision may also benefit the Geno Smith-led Seahawks’ outlook going ahead.
