Baltimore Orioles legend Jim Palmer shared his thoughts on the current state of the roster.

Jim Palmer played on multiple talented Baltimore Orioles teams throughout the course of his 19-year career, helping them win six American League pennants and three World Series from 1966 to 1983. In other words, he recognizes a strong squad when he sees one.

The Orioles haven’t won the World Series since Palmer retired, but that could change soon. Coming off a 101-win season last year, Baltimore is stacked with talent and off to a solid start in 2024, with a record of 12-7 entering play on Saturday.

Palmer recently spoke on The Ryan Ripken Show to discuss the state of the squad, emphasizing many players who have stuck out to him thus far.

Palmer commended the Orioles’ talent on the field, beginning with catcher Adley Rutschman, whom he considers the best backstop in baseball. He also admires Cedric Mullins’ quickness and defense, mentioning the incredible catch he made earlier this week.

Palmer expressed concern about outfielder Austin Hays, who has been unwell and has struggled this season. On the other side, Palmer has noted significant progress and maturity in outfielder Colton Cowser, who is off to a great start after suffering in his first taste of the big last year and appears ready to replace Hays if necessary.

Finally, Palmer is delighted with last year’s signing of Ryan O’Hearn, referring to him as “the Corey Kluber of hitters” due to his ability to make important changes and his highly competitive spirit.

“This is a really good ballclub,” Palmer emphasized. It’s difficult to argue with him.
