Derek Forbort’s made a speedy recovery from multiple injuries

On Monday morning, the Bruins welcomed a familiar face back to the Boston ice.

Derek Forbort was summoned from Providence hours before the Bruins and Maple Leafs met in Game 2 of their first-round Stanley Cup playoff series, according to the AHL transaction wire. Forbort, who just played two games with Providence on a conditioning loan, wore a regular sweater during Monday’s morning skate, indicating he is fully cleared for contact.

Forbort was not among Boston’s top six defenseman in the team’s final practice before Game 2 against Toronto. The 32-year-old and Parker Wotherspoon formed the Bruins’ additional defensive pairing for the training session, but that doesn’t guarantee the former will attend Monday’s game at TD Garden as a spectator.

In early March, the Bruins placed Forbort on long-term injured reserve, and he was anticipated to miss the rest of the season. However, the ninth-year pro “surprised” general manager Don Sweeney — and possibly other Boston decision-makers — by overcoming two “significant injuries” and establishing himself as a potential option for head coach Jim Montgomery.

Multiple illnesses limited Forbort to 35 regular-season games, and he hasn’t played in an NHL game since March 2. However, after bemoaning the Bruins’ net-front efforts in Saturday’s Game 1 victory, Montgomery may insert Forbort in the hopes of Boston tightening up in its own zone.

Beginning at 6 p.m. ET, NESN will broadcast complete coverage of the Maple Leafs-Bruins Game 2.
