Missing Out on Top QB Could Reportedly Cost Kwesi Adofo-Mensah His Job as Vikings GM

The NFL Draft is only four days away, and after years of wondering what the Minnesota Vikings’ long-term quarterback strategy is, it’s almost impossible to believe we’re so close to finding out.

At this time, it appears that general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah will trade up the board on draft night, most likely into the top five, to choose the Vikings’ next franchise quarterback.

Kwesi Adofo-Mensah’s job as the Minnesota Vikings’ general manager could be on the line.
However, if we do not land one of Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, or JJ McCarthy in Minnesota, the third-year GM — who appears to lack the same power within the walls of TCO Performance Center as Rick Spielman once did — may lose his job, according to Charley Walters, a longtime local insider and columnist at the Pioneer Press in St. Paul.

It is becoming evident that general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, who is in his third year with the Vikings, lacks the organizational power that his predecessor, Rick Spielman, possessed. Passing on a top quarterback on Thursday could cost him his job.

Personally, I doubt Kwesi “passes” on a quarterback. If the Vikings do not get their guy, it is most likely because they underestimate QB interest in the top ten and do not make a trade early enough to acquire one of the three quarterback prospects indicated above.

But, regardless of how it happens, this is the first time I’ve heard anyone state that the GM’s job is dependent on his ability to sign a top quarterback. Does this imply that if the Vikings are eliminated from Thursday night’s quarterback draft, Adofo-Mensah will be dismissed shortly afterward? Not necessarily, but Walters does not make that point apparent.

He does go on to say, immediately following his scoop above, that if the Minnesota Vikings are unable to execute a trade up for their player, their backup plan is Oregon’s Bo Nix, not Washington’s Michael Penix Jr.

Fans at the Vikings’ draft party at U.S. Bank Stadium will boo loudly if a quarterback is not selected in the first round. Bo Nix of Oregon is the Vikings’ fallback quarterback pick.
