A former Sheffield Wednesday veteran has been urged to return to Hillsborough this summer.

A former Sheffield Wednesday star has been asked to return to Hillsborough this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday are only a few weeks away from hearing out if they will play in the Championship next season.

The campaign’s conclusion is expected to be followed by intensive contract discussions, as the Owls attempt to prolong the tenure of many of their key players.

Barry Bannan, Josh Windass, and Di’Shon Bernard’s contracts will expire at the end of the season, and Danny Rohl is eager to wait until their Championship status is established before opening new discussions.

Nicky Weaver has already indicated that he will leave Sheffield Wednesday regardless of the outcome.

The Sheffield-born coach will leave his position as Head of Academy Goalkeeping after 29 years with the club.

David Stockdale to join Sheffield Wednesday (again)?
The Owls have already been advised that his position will be difficult to fill given his importance on the team, but journalist Joe Crann has indicated that a former Wednesday goalkeeper might take his place.

David Stockdale joined Wednesday on a free transfer in 2022 and played 24 games as they were promoted to the Championship.

He was later released and went on to join York City as both Head of Recruitment and a player, although he has since resigned his position with immediate effect.

Stockdale wrote on X, “Well….Anyone need a GK….”

Joe Crann promptly responded, “Nicky Weaver is leaving at the end of the season, Stocko.”

The Owls should consider a potential return.
David Stockdale has already began to transition away from a playing position at York City, although it is unknown what his next steps are.

The 38-year-old has spent time around the EFL and might be a valuable addition to Danny Rohl’s coaching team, as he is already familiar with several of the players from his time in Yorkshire.

It is absolutely a move that both the club and Stockdale should explore, as it works out wonderfully for all parties.

He’ll need some goalkeepers to teach, though, as James Beadle and Cameron Dawson are both expected to leave at the end of the season.

Perhaps Stockdale could even serve as a player-coach himself, but Wednesday will undoubtedly be looking to bring in a couple of new faces between the sticks this summer.
