Jets’ beat writer claims team is unserious franchise for embracing viral social media moment

There are numerous situations in which the New York Jets could be characterized as a “unserious” franchise. However, one of them is the organization’s social media staff, which used the power of a breakfast sandwich to link a freshly signed player with his followers.

Last month, the Jets signed Mike Williams to a one-year deal worth up to $15 million. Fans can thank social media user @NYJ_Matt for closing the deal by purchasing a Taylor Ham, egg, and cheese sandwich for Williams and delivering it to One Jets Drive.

Shortly after signing his contract, the Jets’ social media crew captured Williams enjoying a Taylor Ham, egg, and cheese sandwich. Williams even quipped that the renowned New Jersey breakfast sandwich could have been the key to closing the transaction.

The breakfast sandwich may have taken over social media and NFL morning programs, including Good Morning Football, but it was not a universally embraced move. Many thought it highlighted how fans connected with their favorite players in 2024 and helped to connect the Jets’ audience to their new wide receiver. But the New York Post’s Brian Costello was unimpressed.

“I think if you’re a serious organization, any serious organization wouldn’t have done that,” Costello said on the Post’s Gang’s All Here podcast. “The Jets complain about how they’re covered, how they’re a punchline, and no one takes them seriously, and then they do that. So that was my opinion.

Costello is definitely entitled to his opinion, but his own source has covered the story several times. Costello highlighted multiple tales regarding the breakfast sandwich’s social media success, while simultaneously emphasizing that food was not what drew Williams to sign with the Jets.

Of course it was not. The $15 million and the opportunity to play for a quarterback like Aaron Rodgers were certainly factors. However, this does not detract from the fact that @NYJ_Matt and the team’s social media admin executed a one-of-a-kind moment flawlessly.

However, it should also be noted that various outlets—the Post included—capitalized on that moment.

Yes, the Jets are an unserious franchise, and the evidence — not just from Awful Announcing’s past — are numerous. But would we be having the same conversation if a Philadelphia Eagles fan delivered a cheesesteak to the team’s facilities to greet a free agent player?
