Boston Bruins turn to ex-Maple Leaf coach to replace Jim Montgomery as Bruins head coaching job in shamble

Jim Montgomery made modifications to the Bruins’ struggling power play near the end of the season, and ex-Leaf James van Riemsdyk bore the consequences. But Boston’s lack of finishing harmed them in Game 2, so it was time to bring the power forward again.

“Him getting his stick on more pucks would be it,” the coach remarked of JVR’s probable addition to the lineup. “We’ve discussed it a number of times internally.

“He and (the occasionally scratched) Kevin Shattenkirk have been coming in every day to work.” It is not an easy circumstance, but (JVR) has been excellent.”

Van Riemsdyk was questioned if the strategy of using a big man’s net presence for power plays is still popular.

“It’s part of my personality to be able to effect the game from up high (by deflecting shots). Over time, it’s a tight line between enhancing your skills and expanding your game to become more adaptable.

“The most difficult part of my career was (parking in front in practice against the cross checks of gigantic Philadelphia teammate) Chris Pronger. It’s obviously different today (since defenders can’t maul forwards like previously).
