FSU football had their Seminole Showcase over the weekend, indicating that spring practice may end soon. The program will shortly begin its transition to summer exercises, and a few players will make decisions based on their interviews with coaches. FSU is above its 85-scholarship maximum and will most likely attempt to acquire a few players through the transfer portal to add depth and experience in a couple positions. That means that some players on the roster now will not be on the squad when the season starts in August. It’s a process that has been ongoing since the transfer portal’s inception, and it’s one of the reasons FSU’s roster has improved so substantially in recent years. It is a straightforward question for the coaching staff. Is the player in issue adding enough value to preserve their roster slot, or can they find a better option through the transfer portal? One simple technique to locate transfer portal prospects is to look at the roster for older players who have made few contributions over the last 2-3 years. It might be someone who has suffered injuries, or newer players have surpassed them on the depth chart. Here are some units where I predict at least one player to enter the transfer portal, with spring camp wrapping up and the transfer portal window open for the next week:
Wide Receiver
Tight End
Offensive Line
Defensive back
Defensive End
Linebacker
I won’t name players out of respect, and I don’t have an inside source to confirm, either. However, the spring game did provide some insight into my ideas. Despite years in the program, several players did not appear to make an impact on Saturday. I can imagine several young players not getting on the pitch anytime soon at some of these positions, and injuries are likely to influence a couple. I wouldn’t be surprised to see 8-10 more guys enter the gateway. We’ve already seen two: Joshua Burrell and Greedy Vance. Vance committed to the University of Southern California over the weekend. Remember that if you see a guy enter the portal that surprises you, it is unlikely that the coaching staff or The Battle’s End Collective were surprised as well. The two work effectively together to retain the players they believe they must maintain.
