Georgia wide receiver Tyler Williams revealed Tuesday night that he will transfer to Minnesota. He’ll have four years of eligibility left.
Williams only appeared in two games during his redshirt season with the Bulldogs last year, catching one pass for four yards. He was a four-star talent coming out of high school and received scholarship offers from over 35 Power 5 institutions before committing to Georgia.
A potential big-play machine on the perimeter. Technically, he’s really green, which makes sense given that he spent much of his prep career as a quarterback. Despite this, he has a lot of potential as a wide receiver due to his fluid movement patterns and ability to grab contested passes. Size is unknown, but he seems to be over 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds after adding about 15 pounds to his formerly thin, wiry physique. Thick through the glutes, with room to add more mass in the upper half.
He is quite competitive after the catch, using a lengthy stride to maneuver his way through traffic and gain yards. Has made tremendous progress as a route runner over the last eight months or so, but appears to have more luck creating separation on deeper terrain than on shorter terrain at this point in his career. Given his height and weight, he should eventually be able to hold his own as a blocker, but he lacks experience confronting defenders and moving them out of the way. He must also improve at attacking the football with his hands rather than depending solely on advantageous body placement to make grabs.
Caught only 20 catches as a junior, but got off to a strong start as a senior, making an impression not only as a wide receiver, but also as a return man at one of the Sunshine State’s most illustrious high school football programs. Will most certainly need some time to adjust to the speed of the game on Saturdays, but he has the physical tools to emerge as a starter at the Power Five level, and maybe an NFL Draft pick one day if he continues to improve and takes up coaching.
