According to FanSided’s Robert Murray, the Chicago Cubs designated Garrett Cooper on Tuesday. Matt Mervis was brought up and will have a second shot to prove to the Cubs’ management office that he deserves to play in the majors.
Mervis, 26, appeared in 27 games for Chicago in 2023, scoring.167/.242/.289. While the Washington, D.C. native struggled in his initial stint, he has hit at every level in the minors and should ultimately work things out at the plate.
Cooper now has the opportunity to join a competitive club. The 33-year-old made his MLB debut in 2017 and has been a solid big leaguer for the majority of his eight-year career.
Cooper slashed during his rookie season with the Cubs.In 37 at-bats, he batted 270/.341/.432 and had one home run. He was coming off an outstanding 2023 season in which he hit his career-high 17 home runs.
Cooper was chosen an All-Star for the first time in his career in 2022.
The New York Yankees are the best possible fit for him among the teams he may join. With Anthony Rizzo as the only healthy first baseman, the Yankees should be interested in reuniting with the Alabama native. Cooper made his major league debut at New York, hitting.326/.333/.488 over 43 at-bats.
This season, the Yankees have played well, and they currently lead the American League East. The opportunity to play for a squad that appears to be on track to make the playoffs may further pique his interest.
Given his performance this season, it was surprising to learn that Cooper had been designated. The front office must have faith in Mervis, which is understandable given how he’s swung the bat throughout his professional career.
