Maple Leafs star misses practice status uncertain for Game 5 as Leafs coach gives a troubling update

Boston — It’s unknown how Auston Matthews will fare in the Maple Leafs’ pivotal Game 5 against the Bruins at TD Garden because he didn’t practice on Monday.

With a victory on Tuesday at 7 p.m., Boston, who leads the best-of-seven first-round series 3-1, will advance.

The Leafs don’t know the health state of the NHL’s top goal scorer, according to David Alter of the Hockey News. He posted on Twitter:

“Auston Matthews’ condition for tomorrow is “still to be established,” according to Sheldon Keefe. He’s coming with the club. “Hopeful” that he has improved. “We’ll see what comes up tomorrow.”

Sheldon Keefe, the coach of the Leafs, stated that Matthews missed the third period of Game 4, citing an illness. Matthews’ breakaway goal in Game 2 helped Toronto defeat the Bruins.

He went into further detail on Sunday.

It’s not one of those common, everyday sicknesses that kind of comes and goes, for whatever reason. This one has stuck around, Keefe remarked. “Every time he steps out on the ice and asserts himself, the effects have persisted and have gotten worse.” We simply need to control that and give him the time he requires; naturally, we hope that will change.

Throughout the regular season, Matthews played 81 games and led the NHL with 69 goals.
