Mark Robins admits key deficiency needs addressing as Coventry City slip to fourth league defeat in last five

After losing to promotion-chasing Ipswich Town, Mark Robins identified a crucial area in which he believes his Coventry City team has to improve the next season. The Sky Blues manager was displeased that his team had once again given the opposition the opportunity to score goals, a practice he believes must change if the team is to succeed in the future.

The manager responded to the 2-1 loss at CBS Arena by saying, “Rubbish result, performance was OK.” It got a touch monotonous at points. We had a really good offensive against an extremely strong opponent. However, let me start by congratulating them because they are halfway there and will soon receive their gift.

Before Saturday’s season-ending match, Town’s victory put them back in second position, three points ahead of automatic promotion rivals Leeds United.

“From our perspective, we gave away a really soft goal whilst we were trying to build into the game, and that’s really been the story of our season – we concede too many goals, quite a few goals,” Robins said in response to more reflection on City’s performance, which saw Kieffer Moore give the visitors the lead as early as the eighth minute. Given our disadvantage, we set ourselves up for failure.

“We need to address that because giving up too many goals makes it impossible to win games.” On the other hand, we executed our attack really nicely. We possessed the ball for a considerable amount of time; we had 13 shots against their 14, but they had 12 inside the box. The problem is that we can’t hand the opponent goals instead of making them earn them. That is the past that has occurred, and that is the recent past. And so the pressure increases due to the number of goals you need to score and return.

“I was concerned about the energy prior to the game, but that wasn’t the case tonight,” he continued. The thing that cost us was making bad decisions and sacrificing quality. Brad (Collins) has been asked to make a couple spectacular saves, and he has.

We were able to play out. Although they had a full press with five players and five sat behind ready to sweep up anything, it was a touch laborious at times. However, I thought we handled that fairly well and generated some decent openings.

“We scored a terrific goal, and Haji Wright had a great move and finish.” We had our first chance, but the keeper made an incredible stop, and after we leveled the score, they really got going. We simply lacked the ability to hold onto the ball.
