Omari Hutchinson, a Chelsea loanee, was named Ipswich Town’s Young Player of the Year after helping the Tractor Boys win promotion to the Premier League with 10 goals and six assists.
Hutchinson scored in Ipswich’s season-ending 2-0 victory over Huddersfield Town to finish off an incredible Championship career, but he now has some tough choices regarding his future.
He has one year remaining on his contract, and with Chelsea’s formidable defense around him at all three places where he can play, he will need to consider his options carefully in order to decide on the best course for his future.
I evaluate the options that Hutchinson may have, the likelihood of each, and the best course of action for him.
Go back to Chelsea and contend for his position.
The most ambitious, yet least practical, choice is this: Hutchinson stays at Stamford Bridge to compete for his position after his contract, which expires in June 2025, is renewed.
This is improbable for a variety of reasons, not the least of which being that the 20-year-old is probably still not ready to play for Chelsea on a regular basis.
Though he still needs to improve defensively, his incredible recent brace against Hull and several other significant goals for Ipswich this season have demonstrated how good he is.
Additionally, Noni Madueke is starting to distinguish himself on Hutchinson’s favored right wing, and Cole Palmer will undoubtedly succeed him once Enzo Fernandez recovers.
Along with Tyrique George, Diego Moreira, and Angelo Gabriel as young prospects for the three attacking midfield/wing positions, Raheem Sterling is another option down the right.
Beyond all of these existing options, the Athletic has revealed that Chelsea is interested in signing Estevao Willian, a.k.a. “Messinho,” a 17-year-old Brazilian right winger from Palmeiras.
When Estevao reaches 18 in April 2025, he would sign with Chelsea, but he would quickly provide Hutchinson with another challenge in his ascent to the first team.
Hutchinson has already stated to the Athletic that winning trophies and staying at Chelsea are his top priorities, but he will need to give this route serious thought.
His rookie career and the course of the following ten years might be significantly impacted by the prospect of returning to the U21s or spending all of his time on the bench.
Take out a new contract and come back on loan to Ipswich.
Hutchinson wrapped one arm around Leif Davis and wrapped a scarf around his head, looking home during his post-match interview with Sky Sports on Saturday.
When asked if he intended to stay at Ipswich for the upcoming season, he replied, “I hope so.” I’m not sure.
“I’ll have to wait and see what my manager and agent have to say before making any more decisions. I’m not sure; right now, I just want to celebrate.
The best loan I could have ever imagined is this one. I’ve come a long way since the beginning of the season thanks to the boys’ support.
Later, when the Tractor Boys were on their open-top bus tour, he reaffirmed this, adding, “We’ve created history, and I’m so happy to be a part of that history.” It’s the team’s unity and the manager, who has complete faith in each player.
“[Kieran McKenna] gives us complete confidence to step onto the field and demonstrate our abilities. Everyone is like brothers, and it feels like a family. It’s an excellent link.
A deal might be reached here, since Hutchinson has expressed his desire to remain in Ipswich and they will probably want to hold onto him for their first season back in the Premier League.
Since the club would not allow him to finish out his term anywhere else, it would have to be conditional on his signing a new contract with Chelsea.
But playing elite football and working with one of Europe’s most intriguing young coaches—under whom Hutchinson obviously flourishes—might be the best course of action for both Hutchinson’s growth.
Hutchinson has received great praise from McKenna in the past, who stated: “He’s given everything you’d want from a loan player and more.” Despite his youth and great promise, he had never played senior football before to this season.
Move permanently to Ipswich or Napoli
Hutchinson may potentially choose to sign a permanent contract with Ipswich, although doing so would mean giving up his chance to play in the Champions League anytime soon.
With only a year remaining on his present contract, he might prove to be a good investment, especially as Chelsea still needs to acquire funds in order to comply with financial requirements.
Additionally, this would be a big expenditure for Ipswich, who might feel it would be better to use their funds on more seasoned players or in more important positions.
Hutchinson might also be included in a cash-plus-player trade for Victor Osimhen of Napoli; Chelsea has reportedly made offers for Romelu Lukaku and an unidentified young player as part of a possible transfer.
Moving to another club to enhance his career, possibly in a lesser division of the Premier League or in France or Germany, would be a third possibility.
However, this seems like an unsatisfactory solution overall, with Chelsea not being able to make the most of a great asset who may very well develop into a consistent Premier League player and Hutchinson not reaching where he wants to be.
