Former Sunderland man Darren Williams has picked his ‘favoured’ next Sunderland manager.

Darren Williams, a former Sunderland player, has chosen his “favorite” Sunderland manager.

Although it is yet unclear who will lead Sunderland as manager, the team is getting closer to making the announcement.

Rene Maric is currently thought to be out of the running, but there is persistent rumor that Will Still, 31, who left Reims at the beginning of May, will take the position.

Rumors of a new deal for Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl in South Yorkshire appear to have eliminated him from consideration as well.

More names like Liam Rosenior might be considered elsewhere, since clubs in the English Football League and elsewhere will undoubtedly be changing managers in the near future.

Williams, a former player for Sunderland who played for the Black Cats for more than 200 games between 1996 and 2004, feels that owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus should seek elsewhere.

Darren Williams desires At Sunderland, Paul Heckingbottom
Prior to the summer, Paul Heckingbottom, the 46-year-old former manager of Sheffield United and Leeds United, was stated to be the club’s top target; however, subsequent reports said that the 46-year-old was no longer being considered by the organization.

However, Williams believes Heckingbottom, a former Sunderland youth player, would be the ideal choice for the Black Cats, as he stated on Total Sport.

“He’s a former player who was at Sunderland when he was younger, and Paul’s doing well in and around the Championship,” Williams stated.

And you wonder: Would a young man who has lived in Sunderland, understands the club, and is familiar with its mission, come in and establish a little authority? Could he convince the players to play for him and convey his message to them? Yes, potentially.

Williams responded, “Probably, yeah,” when asked if Heckingbottom would be his “favorite” choice at Sunderland.

The issue Sunderland is currently facing
For a long time, it appeared like Sunderland was determined to bring in a young, dynamic coach like Still. If they don’t get their wish, or Still himself, the supporters might not be too happy.

The majority of Sunderland supporters appear to be in favor of the team appointing a creative and imaginative coach.

While it may be consoling, the club doesn’t seem to have many long-term goals when it comes to the prospect of another Tony Mowbray joining.

Furthermore, despite Heckingbottom’s track record as a coach and his safety as a team member, it appears that the Black Cats’ management is willing to take a chance on a manager who may or may not be a huge success.

Although he still demonstrated at Reims that he has the savvy to overcome the obstacles, he may have acted a little immaturely in handling his connections to Sunderland.

Every manager carries some risk, but some, like the tried-and-true Heckingbottom, certainly carry less.

It is unclear if the Sunderland board would be content with just having a reliable backup.
