Alabama defensive lineman signs his first four-year contract

The Los Angeles Chargers announced on Thursday that defensive lineman Justin Eboigbe had signed his first NFL contract.

On April 27, the Chargers selected Alabama’s Eboigbe with the 105th overall pick in the NFL Draft.

With that selection position comes a four-year deal estimated to be worth $4.859 million.
Every player selected is given a four-year contract. The pick number, the NFL’s salary cap of $255.4 million for the 2024 season, and this year’s rookie compensation pool are the basis for the contract values. This methodology is outlined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the league and its players association.

Eboigbe joined Los Angeles when defensive coordinator Jesse Minter and head coach Jim Harbaugh were revamping the defense line. Both were members of Michigan’s CFP national champion squad from 2023.

The Chargers have released the two interior lineman who played the most defensive snaps in 2023. Sebastian Joseph-Day was waived by Los Angeles after starting the first 14 games of the previous season, and Austin Johnson joined the Buffalo Bills during the NFL’s free agency period.

The Chargers’ roster for the offseason includes nine defensive linemen. Poona Ford, a former starter for the Seattle Seahawks, joined the team in free agency after appearing in eight games with the Bills the previous year. In 2023, Morgan Fox accounted for 38% of Los Angeles’ defensive snaps, Scott Matlock for 23%, and Otito Ogbonnia for 19%. Only Christopher Hinton, one of the other five defensive linemen, has played in an NFL regular-season game, appearing in seven during the previous two seasons.
