A player has never been in question about Unai Emery’s intentions. There has never been any doubt about the role or involvement of any player in the squad since the first transfer window he oversaw at Aston Villa, a window in which the team released a number of fringe players. This was followed by a rush of long-term contracts signed by key players, including Ollie Watkins, Ezri Konsa, and Leon Bailey in recent times.
If you, like Aaron Ramsey, Morgan Sanson, or Philippe Coutinho, are not considered a long-term member of the team, you will be given the chance to play elsewhere, either permanently or on loan. Emery is aware of the people he wants to collaborate with, but clubs in today’s game have additional obstacles to overcome, especially ambitious teams like Villa, who may not be allowed to spend all of their money.
It is obvious that the Lions will need to spend wisely and cautiously throughout the transfer window in order to prepare for their Champions League run the following season. They will welcome back Kosta Nedeljkovic and Cameron Archer, have parted ways with loanees Clement Lenglet and Nicolo Zaniolo, and, according to numerous reports, Ross Barkley may be the first traditional summer signing to sign for free.
Emery is performing a squad audit on the players he currently has at his disposal while the transfer cogs are starting to turn slowly. Based on this audit, he will determine whether he believes any of these players will have a role in the upcoming season or if they should be sacrificed in favor of making room during the summer transfer window.
When asked if Archer was coming back prior to the loss at Crystal Palace, Emery replied, “Yes, he is coming back at first.” Wes Edens and Nassef Sawiris will be our next meeting partners as we analyze the [players]. We will make an effort to evaluate every circumstance on an individual basis and work with each athlete to find the best course of action.
“On Sunday, when the season comes to an end, Wes Edens, Damian Vidagany, director of football operations, myself, and the club will sit down and make decisions. We haven’t made a decision regarding each individual’s future presence with us yet.”
