The Boston Bruins were defeated by the Florida Panthers in six games. After a thrilling game-seven victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs, they earned a trip to the second round, but they were unable to move farther.
The Bruins will now be left wondering what went wrong this season as they enter the off-season. They performed better than the majority of people anticipated, but Boston will never consider that good enough.
After winning game one, the Bruins dropped the next three, but a thrilling victory in game five forced a decisive game six. They should be saddened that they were unable to complete it.
The following three factors were the main causes of the Bruins’ failure to win the Stanley Cup and the series:
The Boston Bruins are unaware of something that the Florida Panthers are.
The Bruins have fallen short against the Panthers in a postseason series for the second consecutive year. In 2022–23, the Bruins had the greatest record in NHL history, but they blew a 3–1 lead.
They were defeated by them in six games this year as well. Despite being one of the finest teams in the NHL, the Bruins are struggling to overcome Florida in the postseason.
With a core that includes Brad Marchand, David Pastrnak, and Charlie McAvoy, among others, the Bruins will eventually need to overcome the Panthers if they are to win the Stanley Cup.
Florida is that excellent, so figuring out how to defeat the Panthers would be a terrific way to figure out how to win the Stanley Cup.
The main reason they failed in 2023–2024 was that they could not be defeated. The outcome of the regular season head-to-head encounter is irrelevant. All eyes are on the postseason.
The Boston Bruins should be positioned farther out in the middle of the rink.
Prior to the start of the 2024–25 season, the Boston Bruins must resolve the center position. In this series against the Florida Panthers, that was a major problem for them.
Despite their strength in goal, on the wing, and defense, they were unable to obtain what they needed in the middle of the ice.
David Krejci and Patrice Bergeron both left the NHL last summer. That’s what gave Boston the large hole at center.
Charlie Coyle and Pavel Zacha are decent players, but they weren’t good enough to be in the top six centers in this series. Taking on players such as Sasha Barkov, Sam Bennett, and Anton Lundell is a difficult task.
A franchise center is not something you can just pop into any old place. They are really difficult to locate. Although many very exceptional players are selected later in the draft, most are selected in the top five.
Perhaps the Bruins don’t need to acquire a player of that caliber at this time. All they have to do is identify one or two players who could be upgraded. By doing so, they will be able to move Coyle and Zacha into positions in the lineup that make more sense. We’ll wait till summer to see who becomes available.
The Bruins’ David Pastrnak wasn’t the same person in the playoffs this year.
For the Boston Bruins to succeed with their present roster, David Pastrnak is a key player. In 2023–2024, he provided them everything and more.
Pastrnak scored 110 points (47 goals, 63 assists) in 82 games this season. He will finish in the top 10 for the Hart Trophy and was one of the best players in the NHL.
The Bruins should be most disappointed that he wasn’t at his best during the playoffs. Even though it was only his fifth point of the series (3-2-5) he made a crucial play in overtime of game seven.
He finished the six-game series against the Panthers with one goal and two assists for a total of three points. Simply said, it wasn’t the same pasta that we usually see during the playoffs.
He hasn’t been the same elite player that vanishes during the postseason. We’ll find out shortly whether or not something was causing him health problems.
When it comes to offensive, everything goes through him, so when he has a slow series, the team may be in danger.
All of these are issues that can be resolved in the summer. Anticipate a few astute and beneficial moves from them with their newfound cap space.
