Heartbreaking: Boston Bruins GM Don Sweeney makes a big announcement on his resignation

Don Sweeney, general manager of the Boston Bruins, will soon be leading one of the best hockey teams in recent memory.

On Friday, the longtime Bruins executive was chosen associate general manager of Canada’s 2026 Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team and general manager of Team Canada for the 2025 NHL “4 Nations Face-Off” competition.

Sweeney expressed his gratitude for the chance to be a member of Hockey Canada on Friday in a news statement issued by the team. Working with Jim Nill, Ryan Getzlaf, Scott Salmond, and other players—including all the proud Canadian players—as well as having the confidence of Doug Armstrong, Katherine Henderson, and Pat McLaughlin will be an amazing life experience.

“We will put a lot of effort into assembling the top teams to compete at the greatest level and proudly represent Canada in order to achieve a single objective. I am grateful to Cam Neeley and the Jacobs family for their support of my work with Hockey Canada.

When it comes to selecting the Team Canada rosters for the 4 Nations Face-Off and the 2026 Winter Games in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, Sweeney will have no shortage of options.

The likes of Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon, Sidney Crosby, Cale Makar, and Connor Bedard are anticipated to lead Team Canada, and Brad Marchand, the captain of the Boston Bruins, will try to make it into an Olympic team for the first time in 2026.

The NHL will lead the 4 Nations Face-Off, an international competition that will lead up to the 2026 Olympic Games. Four teams from the United States, Canada, Sweden, and Finland will compete in the competition, which is scheduled to run from February 12 to February 20, 2025, spanning nine days.

Doug Armstrong will have Sweeney and Dallas Stars general manager Jim Nill as assistants on Canada’s 2026 men’s Olympic team.

As general manager of the Boston Bruins, who top the Atlantic Division, Sweeney is in his sixth season. He led the team to its eighth consecutive postseason berth this season and was awarded the Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award for 2018–19.

Sweeney has benefited greatly from a number of cheap additions made by a cap-constrained Bruins team this past winter, most notably Danton Heinen and Morgan Geekie.
