As Northern Irish superstar Rory McIlroy attempts to move on from his marriage to Erica Stoll, aspects of the golfer’s current state of mind have become clear as he also reunited with old faces
With friends providing support, Rory McIlroy is concentrating on “getting back to winning” while he heals from his approaching divorce from long-term fiancée Erica Stoll.
The shocking news of the four-time major league winner’s separation from his spouse was revealed on May 13 when he filed for divorce in Florida’s Palm Beach County State Court. After meeting in 2012, McIlroy and Stoll, 35, have been married for the last seven years.
The world No. 3 seems to be concentrating on his game right now in an attempt to lessen the negative effects of his personal conflict on his career. Although McIlroy hasn’t won a major in ten years, he did win two straight on the US circuit before this month’s US PGA Championship.
The Northern Irishman is keen to relive the glory of his past career, according to a source who spoke to People. “He’s just trying to find himself, focus and get back to winning,” the source said. “[He] went through such a winning phase and hasn’t done much in the last five-ish years.”
The insider also discussed the current impasse over a contract between the American circuit and LIV Golf, as well as McIlroy’s recent futile attempts to get back on the PGA circuit policy board. They continued: “Plus, he put his blood, sweat and tears into defending the PGA against LIV golf the last two years and it was basically for nothing.”
The insider even showed sympathy for her former lover Stoll during the split. They said: “Being a golfer’s wife is a difficult life. Since they’re constantly away at practices and competitions, a great deal of trust is required. It’s unrealistic to expect them to be at home and able to assist with the kids, so you’ll either have to trust them or go along with their trip.”
This comes after an additional source told Us Weekly that Stoll had experienced “loneliness” in her union with McIlroy, arguing that: “One point of contention in Rory’s marriage to Erica was that Erica felt lonely in their marriage.” It was difficult to be married to Rory.”
“She had an understanding of his line of work, but after they had [daughter] Poppy, things really changed and she had a new perspective,” the insider claimed, providing specifics about their personal dynamics. “Erica was usually absent for most of his tournaments and was really focused on Poppy.”
According to the Mail, McIlroy appears to be seeking support from his former Belfast buddies as he attempts to accept the dissolution of his marriage. Seeking comfort from people he knew, he tearfully got back together with his friends, who he affectionately called the “Mac Pack,” to attend Mitchell Tweedie and Lynsey Agnew’s wedding in Siena, Italy.
As an usher during the wedding, the famous golfer mingled with buddies Ricky McCormick, Steven Davidson, Dan Diamond, and Harry Diamond. Together, the buddies boarded a plane bound for Europe, all decked out in football shirts and George Best-inspired jerseys with a Northern Ireland motif.
