Report: NBA super star wants to play with Victor Wembanyama as he became a free agent

This week, ESPN NBA draft expert Jonathan Givony has made a lot of noise about the San Antonio Spurs. “Every free agent, every veteran guard, they all want to play with Victor Wembanyama,” stated the founder and co-owner of Draftexpress.com during an appearance on The Ringer’s NBA Draft program. It’s interesting to note that this summer, LeBron James is essentially free agency.

Superstars like James and Paul George are among the players who can become free agents, while other well-known players like Klay Thompson, DeMar DeRozan, and James Harden are not.

The Spurs, who have the fourth and eighth picks in this month’s draft, Givony said, aren’t willing to wait a few years to develop around their generational talent.

Although it’s widely believed that the Spurs would want to bolster their roster as much as possible through trades and the draft, Givony believes that free agency might be a rich source of talent.

LeBron James’ Spurs complaint against Victor Wembanyama
Even though there aren’t any men on the market right now that are MVP worthy, the player who is regarded as the best of this generation might be. LeBron’s future may also depend on what happens with his son Bronny James, but for good reason, talkers haven’t been talking much about the “King” in San Antonio. However, that may be a little ironic given that James was previously, before Wemby, somewhat associated with the Spurs.

It is commonly known that the all-time top scorer adores Spurs Hall of Fame head coach Gregg Popovich. James has never held back when it comes to sharing his admiration for the most successful coach in NBA history, both on and off the court. Though the rumors about whether the famous power forward might want to play for Pop and with Tim Duncan persisted for a few off-seasons as he approached the end of his career, they never went further than that—at least not in public.

The Spurs’ current situation is very different. They have the player who is widely regarded as the biggest game-changer since James. With several draft picks available for the remainder of the decade, including two picks in the top 10 and two in the second round later this month, they are actively constructing their roster around Victor Wembanyama. Which brings us to Bronny.

According to reports, the former USC Trojan has consented to work out for the Phoenix Suns and his dad’s current team, the Los Angeles Lakers, exclusively before the draft. Spurs would be eliminated if that isn’t a smoke screen. In that scenario, Popovich and team have an additional option to go after the player who is thought by some to be the greatest to have ever played the game.

Huge salary cap room is available to the Spurs. They’ll probably spend some cash this summer to add to the team, but they won’t be going on a spending binge that will take them out of the running for the title should the biggest player become available.

The Spurs seem to have endless options when it comes to strengthening their squad. That might involve an unrestricted grasp at the goal of free agency.
