Occasionally, the right response is the least interesting one available. This was evident in The Athletic’s yearly MLB Player Poll, when Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers was a popular choice.
His peers voted him the top player in the game right now, which was pretty obvious. In an effort to keep things unpredictable, Ohtani even had players trying to harm him.
“The two-time MVP was selected as the top player in the sport by 46% of voters in our poll. Even though a few other players agreed that Ohtani was the true solution, they chose to respond differently out of concern that they would come across as overly predictable.
Ohtani has been hitting well this year.310 with 41 runs batted in and 15 home homers. Throughout his first season in Los Angeles, he has maintained his amazing effect on the field, and players all across the league have noticed.
“There’s no way to compare. He doesn’t have a comp; everyone does.
Ohtani has had more time to concentrate at the plate even though he isn’t pitching this season. He has experienced a few hitting slumps, in part because of a bothersome hamstring injury. He might be better than ever overall, though.
The Babe Ruth analogies have persisted and probably always will, especially when he probably returns to the mound the next season.
The respect he has built around the league is clear and speaks to the type of player he has become over the years. Ohtani remains the biggest show in the game, not just to the fans but to his colleagues, as well.
