Shocking: Max Verstappen “damage” Sergio Perez as he pour cold water on the F1 driver

Sergio Perez signed a new Red Bull contract last week but was brought crashing back down to earth at the Canadian Grand Prix where he struggled for pace before crashing out

In light of Sergio Perez’s terrible weekend, Max Verstappen thinks the Mexican can continue to assist Red Bull lead the Formula 1 standings.

Perez and the team announced last Tuesday that he had inked a new two-year contract extension. However, he was unable to build on that performance with a victory at the Canadian Grand Prix.

On race day, the 34-year-old was unable to make up for his poor qualifying position of 16th fastest. In addition to finding it difficult to pass on a wet track, Perez lost control and crashed on lap 51, severely damaging his rear wing.

Verstappen was questioned about his thoughts on his teammate’s difficulties. “I think the damage was done yesterday [in qualifying], of course, for Checo,” was his response. In these situations, it’s really difficult to start from the back. Naturally, I witnessed him resign after the damage was done.

“I was aware that I needed to score heavily in order to prevent the other teams from catching up. However, in my opinion, you don’t really lose out too much if you keep winning and collect 25 points, even if the other players finish P2, P3. And then occasionally these one-offs are kind of affordable.”

Verstappen hinted that he won the race to lessen the harm to Red Bull. Ferrari, who are already 49 points behind the leaders in the championship, had an even worse day as both of their drivers were unable to finish, earning them 0 points.

However, both drivers from Mercedes and McLaren were among the top five after Verstappen. The Dutchman continued by stating unequivocally that he would appreciate Perez’s assistance in maintaining Red Bull’s leadership in the championship.

“Obviously, we always want the two cars to be up there,” he continued. Furthermore, I’m positive that this will quickly alter once more. To be honest, all we really need to do is work on our automobile to make it a little easier to drive and, perhaps, a little more pleasant. Then, as we did at the start of the season, I’m positive that we have both cars back up there.”

Christian Horner, the team principal, echoed that wish by placing the responsibility for Perez’s performance in the Spanish Grand Prix next time out. “It was a terrible weekend for Checo and, obviously, we picked up some damage,” the British man stated. In Barcelona, he will have to make a great return.

“We are slightly off the hook since Ferrari had a shocker and didn’t receive any points, but we still need both cars to score. We managed to get away with it today, but starting in Barcelona and continuing until the end of the year, we need Checo back there.”
