Despite leading the Women’s PGA Championship after her best Major round in two years, Lexi Thompson says she’s still happy with her decision to retire

Lexi Thompson is in the lead in the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship after shooting a first-round 68, despite having announced her retirement from the game.

With her best round in a Major in two years, Thompson leads Nelly Korda and Patty Tavatanakit by one stroke at four under, the first solo first-round lead at a Major in her career.

The 29-year-old, who declared just before the US Open that she would be ending her career at the end of the current campaign, performed incredibly well last week as she came in second.

Even if Thompson goes on to win another Major this week, she says she’s happy with her retirement decision, despite being in charge at Sahalee Country Club.

Thompson responded, “I figured I would be getting that question,” when asked if her choice would change if she won this week.

“I’m simply trying to live day by day. I declared what I was going to say. I’m quite happy with it. Since golf is an insane game, I won’t be looking too far ahead. Simply enjoy each day as it comes and see where it leads.”

However, Thompson does not believe that her recent performance is due to her awareness that this is her last tour season.
