Martin Necas is reportedly a target for the Chicago Blackhawks to sign this offseason. It makes sense because the forward from the Carolina Hurricanes is just what the Hawks need to bolster their roster in order to fight for the postseason.
In 77 games played last season, the soon-to-be unrestricted free agent recorded 24 goals and 29 assists. In 2022–2023 he finished with 28 goals and 43 assists.
The Blackhawks require more forwards who aren’t afraid to fire the puck and set up other players for goals. Necas, who is 25, is the ideal player to bring in during this protracted rebuild.
Because they have to pay Seth Jarvis, who is also a pending RFA, it is thought that the Hurricanes would be open to trading the pending RFA. Jake Drury, a center, is also designated for restricted free agency despite his promising play.
Teuvo Teravainen and veteran Jake Guentzel will also be free agents without restrictions. The Blackhawks might also sign either of these players in free agency.
It goes without saying that the Hurricanes have a limited amount of financial resources to maintain one of the league’s top offensive units. Given that Drury is 24 and Jarvis is 22, it makes sense to trade Necas in order to transfer someone. Furthermore, Drury’s upcoming agreement will be less costly than Necas.
The Hawks’ chances of acquiring Necas in exchange for his limited free-agent rights are hindered.
The Hurricanes reportedly have no interest in trading prospects or draft picks for Necas.
That poses a problem for the Blackhawks as they lack a lot of assets to pull off a hockey trade.
The Blackhawks might be a great trade partner for another rebuilding team because they have an abundance of extra draft picks and potential prospects. The Hurricanes want players back who can help them right now because they still believe they are in a window of contention.
The Blackhawks don’t have many players who can assist a team right now, with the exception of Jason Dickinson, Nick Foligno, and Seth Jones. Even so, Dickinson might have simply enjoyed a career season before reverting to a respectable level of play. Foligno is getting older, and the contract with Seth Jones is a metaphorical albatross around the neck of the Blackhawks.
The Blackhawks could make the audacious decision to sign Necas.
With enough budget room, the Blackhawks might try to sign Necas to an offer sheet instead of making a trade.
The issue with that is that Necas can be traded by the Hurricanes to a team that can execute a hockey transaction and sign him to a contract before free agency begins.
In the event that Necas manages to procure an offer sheet, the Blackhawks ought to consider securing his signature. He is a youthful, gifted offensive player who is on the verge of reaching his prime. Necas can assist the Hawks in meeting their goal of raising the bar.
That being said, there is little likelihood of obtaining Necas because the Blackhawks are unable to provide the Hurricanes with much immediate assistance.
