Patrick Mahomes Defends Travis Kelce amid Criticism: Chiefs TE Gets Triple-Teamed

Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce haven’t been able to build a strong connection on the field in 2024 compared to past seasons.

Mahomes explained that the nine-time Pro Bowl tight end hasn’t been as involved in the pass game due to the extra attention he receives from defenses.

According to Mahomes on Sunday, “Yeah, it’s crazy because teams still — the respect factor they have for Travis is just unreal,” as reported by Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. “We’re calling a lot of plays for Travis, and it seems like two or three people are going to him, which is well-deserved. I mean, he is aware of it.”

Through the first three weeks of his 2024 season, Kelce is only averaging 23 yards per game, easily a career low over the course of a full season. Three games in, he has yet to find the end zone despite having 37 receiving touchdowns over the previous four years.

On Sunday Night Football, the 34-year-old Chiefs player caught four of his five targets for 30 yards as the team defeated the Atlanta Falcons 22–17. Following a run of nine hundred and eighty-two receiving yards in each of the seasons from 2016 through 2022, Kelce’s pace slowed down in 2023. During the playoffs, the seasoned player performed admirably, averaging 88.8 yards per game to help Kansas City win the Super Bowl for the second time in a row.

The Chiefs are still unbeaten after three games and seem ready to challenge for a championship once more, despite his personal troubles. If Kelce isn’t as productive towards the end of the regular season, Kansas City may have problems. However, he could be able to continue to flourish in the postseason.
